Tonight I had meat loaf, broccoli, mashed potatoes and gravy, milk and pecan pie for desert.

Depending on whether or not the FOB (Forward Operating Base) is American dictates a lot about the meals. It is always fun being on a FOB that isn't American as the food choices can vary widely.

A very small percentage of soldiers eat MREs from time to time, but that is more to get the candy (Skittles, M&Ms, etc.) than anything else. Any service member here very rarely eats an MRE because he or she has to. Some soldier who run day missions on the Iraqi economy do, but there are generally other options available.

The fast food here is usually in abundance on the larger FOBs. Burger King, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, KFC and (everyones favorite :-) Green Beans coffee are able to operate because the conditions are safer and more stable. On the smaller FOBs, there is nothing of the sort. The fast food places are okay every now and then, but there is something a little off about the taste in almost everything purchased there.

The opportunity to eat Iraqi food varies from unit to unit. Some units have a lot of contact with Iraqi civilians and some don't. A few FOBs have an "Iraqi Cafe" on post that sell coffee and a small selection of Iraqi food. My favorite Iraqi food is "oroug" ... a little patty made out of lamb, potatoes and onions. Most plates are served with fresh vegetables. A cold Rani drink (fruit drinks with pulp in them) complete a pretty damned good lunch!

A lot of other soldiers go a different route and have food mailed to them from the States. These tend to be foods that are easily microwavable and ready in minutes. My roommate and I can get a little creative and have made pizza, quesadillas, hot sandwiches, etc.

Like I said - no one eats MREs because they have to. I am six months into my tour with six to go. I am away from my home base 90% of the time and have as yet had to even look at an MRE.

Have a GREAT Army day!! Hooah!!
